This activity is a cross between a craft and a sensory activity. To begin, fill a plastic tub with water. Color the water blue with liquid watercolor. Place the tub on a towel-covered table. Add liquid dish soap and cornstarch and mix it up until bubbles form.
*Tips for Parents: This step is really fun for kids. Add shells and small plastic toys and let the kids play for as long as they’d like. Make sure you supervise children playing with water at all times.
Step 2 – Capture the Ocean
After the kids are finished playing with the sensory foam ocean, ask them if they’d like to create their own ocean in a jar. Provide them with a small cup or plate of sand, a spoon, and some small shells. Help kids spoon some sand into the bottom of a jar. Mix together some more water with liquid watercolor and add a squirt of baby oil. Have kids pour the water into the jar to fill.
*Tips for Parents: The baby oil will help the water and sand separate when mixed up. Use duck tape to seal the lid of the jar and prevent your child from opening it after the project is finished. You can also hot glue the top on to prevent spills.
