This activity gives kids a chance to get out into the fall weather and get a little creative.
What You’ll Need:
Step 1 – Go for a nature walk
A lot of the activities on this blog ask you to take a nature walk with your kids. This is a fun way to get outside with a purpose. Bring a bag to collect leaves, and pick up as many as you’d like. The crunchier the better.
*Tips for Parents: Parents can use this time to teach about autumn. Talk about how the leaves fall from the trees this time of year; explain deciduous vs. evergreen trees; go home and use the internet to look up what types of trees the leaves you collected fell from.
Step 2 – Crush the leaves
Have your child crush and crumple the collected leaves.
*Tips for Parents: Encourage your child to use different body parts to crush the leaves. Use your hands over a bowl; use scissors; use your feet; use your imagination!
Step 3 – Make the collage
*Tips for Parents: Kids can trace their hands to make a trunk with branches. Older kids can observe actual trees outside as inspiration for their tree trunks. Talk about different tree characteristics: Are they tall? Short? Skinny or wide? Is the bark textured or smooth? What color is the trunk?
