Introduce your child to color and texture with these textured fish rubbings.
What You’ll Need:
Step 1 – Trace and cut out shapes
Create your own fish shapes or print the templates below onto card stock. Cut around the edges, and trace onto cardboard. Cut out the cardboard shapes.
*Tips for Parents: Kids can help with the tracing and/or the cutting. Hold the template in place as your child traces around it with a pencil or marker. Alternatively, tape the template to the cardboard and have your child rub the edges with crayons. The outline of the shape will be transferred onto the cardboard.
Step 2: Create Texture
Create freehand designs on the fish using the glue gun.
*Tips for Parents: This is a step that may need to be done by adults only. Glue guns can cause severe burns.
Step 3: Color the Fish
After the glue dries, use crayons to color the cardboard fish.
*Tips for Parents: Talk about color, texture, and movement. What happens when the crayon hits the glue gun lines? Does it stop? Does your child have to move around the line? Feel the lines with your fingers. Are they smooth?
Step 4: Make Fish Rubbings
*Tips for Parents: This is most effective when the crayons are rubbed sideways on the paper. Kids can help remove paper from crayons. Use lots of colors to achieve a rainbow effect. Try using chalk on colored paper for a different effect.
