Before You Start: Cut 8" wide pieces of white or light-colored felt (one for each child) about 12"-18" in length and long pieces of yarn for hanging. Set out Colorations® Fabric Markers, small bowls with Colorations® Washable School Glue, stencils and a variety of collage materials, such as glitter, beads, feathers and pom-poms. Provide jumbo wooden craft sticks (8" x 1") or thin wood strips of about the same size; each child will need 4 of them.
Let's Get Started! Step 1. Give each child their piece of felt. Allow them to decorate their felt pieces any way they like; you may want to encourage them to use stencils or other collage art to help illustrate their interests.
Step 2. Once children have finished decorating and glue dries, have them turn over their felt and glue a craft stick horizontally along the top and bottom edges.
Step 3. Provide each child with a piece of yarn. Have the children glue the ends of their yarn about 1/2" down from the top edge of the front of their felt, so that each end of yarn is glued on the left and right sides of the felt piece .The yarn then forms a loop for hanging.
Step 4. Have children glue two more craft sticks, this time to the front of their felt, one each horizontally along the top and bottom edges, sandwiching the felt and yarn directly between the sticks. This will reinforce the structure of the hanging.
Step 5. Allow hangings to dry overnight on a flat surface. Now everyone has their own special wall hanging to display in the class or to give as a gift.
Furthermore: Have the children take turns sharing their wall hangings with the class. Encourage discussion about the interests or memories they've chosen to showcase on the felt.
