Making Patterns

makingpatterns This is a fun way for students to practice patterns with foam shapes.

Goals:

  • To develop shape and pattern recognition

Before You Start: After teaching a lesson about patterns, let the students practice making their own! You will need self-adhesive foam shapes (or regular foam shapes and glue). Pre-cut strips of construction paper measuring 3 inches long.

Let's Get Started! Step 1. Pass out 1 pre-cut strip of construction paper and 10 foam shapes to each child.

Step 2. Have the students design a pattern using the shapes. Encourage them to use their creativity and try different combinations!

Step 3. Have each child share what she made with the rest of the class. Encourage them to talk about the different patterns.

Furthermore: Display these on a bulletin board or on the wall.
